Are exercises important for managing your Diabetes?

In Ayurveda, Prameha ,The first line of treatment for Diabetic patients is called Meda dhatu dushti (focus on adipose fat) in abdomen region and Mansa dhatu (focus on the muscles). By reducing the fat in the adipose tissue around the vital organs as Liver and Pancreases, the beta cells that may be dormant (Type II) can be reactivated.

What is the connection between Diabetes and maintaining a good exercise regime? Exercise helps with Metabolism can be classified as 2 types.

  • Anabolic – Build phase (insulin)
  • Catabolic – Break phase

In most cases, Diabetes is caused by Insulin resistance (excess of insulin floating in body) there by causing you to gain fat and store in the Adipose tissues beneath the stomach. The fat is white in color and called visceral fat. Visceral fat can be reduced thru proper Diet and Exercise.

What Types of exercise should you do?

Exercises that focus on your exec skeletal muscles and abdomen region are best suited for optimal results.

  • Yogic exercise that focus on the abdomen region
  • Weight training
  • Brisk Walking – 45 mins covering 4.5 kms
  • Swimming
  • Resistance Training (HIIT)

Also, the exercise regime need not be more than 45 mins if it is intense. Cortisol will be secreted again if the body is over worked or over stressed. Insulin levels will rise gain and fat burning will not take place.

Exercise done in the morning time on an empty stomach produce the best results. Why? The glucose levels get depleted and fat burning starts. The fat burning adaption starts in about 1-2 weeks if you have maintained your diet as well.

Every body type and gender take their own time to build a good metabolism. Patience and consistency is the key. Will power and trust gives you a high success rate.
