Over the last 3 years of Consulting, when I speak to most clients, they seem to be happy with control of HbA1C with a combination of Oral medication and or under Insulin therapy. Is that a good thing? For people, that may be struggling to lower their HbA1c for a long time, that is a good first start. What should be the Goal for Diabetes patients?
In my view, Preservation of the Beta Cells of the Pancreas should be the ultimate Goal of Diabetes management. Beta Cells are mostly dormant in the case of Type 2 Diabetics and later tend to be “De-differentiated” (turning into Glucagon cells) as recent research points to.”The Golden Years for Diabetes Management” is during the first 10 years of Diabetes Mellitus (Type 2) identification. Effective Nutritional Therapy and Lifestyle change tackling Metabolic Syndrome and Inflammation in the body has a faster reversal.
Conventional Allopathic medication starts with Biguanides(Metformin) and progressively require a combination of one or two agents (Sulfonylureas, DPP-4, SGLT 2 Inhibitors) with end-stage requiring insulin therapy. While looking to aggressively treat the Glucose surges or spikes, there is an effect of medication on the Gut, Liver, Kidney and Heart as well. So, by trying to solve one problem we are creating another…referred to as “side effect” of medication.
What should be the Journey from Start to Reversal?
- Step 1 : Reduction/Normalization In Blood Sugar But The Medication (If Any) Remains The Same.
- Step 2 : Reduction In Both Blood Sugar And Medicines (If Any).
- Step 3 : Hba1c (%) Is More Than 6 And The Medication is Reduced
- Step 4 : Hba1c (%) Is More Than 6 And The Medication Has Stopped.
- Step 5 : Hba1c (%) Is Less Than 6 And Medication Has Stopped.
- Step 6 : Hba1c (%) Is Less Than 6, Medicine Has Stopped And improved Insulin sensitivity, Inflammation is low.
- Step 7 : Blood Sugar Remains Normal Irrespective of Dietary fluctuations (Excellent Fitness).GUT flora is excellent in terms of good bacteria.
The 7 step process takes a longer time (close to an year or so) as we let the metabolic syndrome fester in our body. Medication along with Nutrition and Diet goes a long way to maintain and reverse the Disorder. Nutrition Therapy started “Earlier the Better”.
